A good day's cricket

August 13th was a very good day.. logith and shagun were supposed to come over to my place for the day.. and i had this cricket match lined up in the afternoon.

ofcourse cricket is my first priority.. so i was hoping that only rain could intervene and make it all work out well.

it was raining in the morning and jerry - my captain - called me and said the match was off.. i was so happy that my friends wouldnt have to be alone at my place..

then half hour later the match was on.. thanks to the 'on-off' london weather.

i was damn pissed off with the opposite team as they were keen to play even with the erratic weather and didnt want to call it off.

managed to eat some rice and channa masala which shagun made and rushed to play the match... it was damn raining in the bus and i was cursing myself!!

finally the match started half hour late and we batted first..
i was one down as usual... it was a wet pitch and i was struggling initially to get my eye in.. this was also the first day i had worn my spike shoes :!)

took around 8 balls to score my single. after one over, i was at 21. 3 fours a six and a double and a dot ball. that was some over!!!

i really took that bowler out and he was changed promptly. that day, i was really so focussed and in my zone. Kept on hitting fours and sixes. Scored my second 50 of the season and it was really a memorable one. Ended up at 71 - with 8 fours and 3 sixes.

I also had to open the bowling and by the third over, I had taken 2 wickets, both in-cutting clean bowled deliveries.

i was the man of the match for the 5th time of the season. i consider that a mini-achievement in itself.

the best shot i played was a spanking six over cover - i really enjoyed that shot and it is fresh in my mind.!!

won that match by a mile and then went early... and then had a good time with logith and shagun.

Scotland Yet again....

The long weekend of the 27th was yet another interesting occasion. decided to go to scotland.. not sure why.

couple of reasons mainly... sangee was back from her engagement.. so thought will meet her.. also sanju was also in uk and was planning to meet sangee in scotland..

all in all - a meeting with my in-law relatives. to add some friendship, shagun also joined in.. shagun is my colleague.. she is from the offshore team.. she was in UK for a month from august start.

it was very good fun.. day one was marked for edinburgh.. sanju & his friends from work and shagun visited the castle and the palace.. while sangee and myself decided to take a cruise.. we travelled half hour only to reach the destinatoin and find there was no cruise for just that day!! what a timing.

however we did walk around the beach a bit and it was really a nice time!

the later part of the evening was dominated by one question - who will sleep where?

it was an interesting group discussion between four characters with four different perspectives and at the end of it all - left some distaste in my mind!

nevertheless we went on and all took refuge in sangee's place.

next day was loch day.. we took a day tour around sterling castle and the loch.. personally sterling castle was more fascinating than edinburgh castle. We didnt go to the 'Braveheart' William Wallace monument. The evening was loch time.. and we all went on a cruise for 40 min. That was really so cool. I enjoyed every bit of it.

Sangee suprisingly dropped out at the last minute for the cruise and spend some pleasant time all alone.

Sanju was having a great time seeing all these places.. and yeah in the bus he was sleeping with the head set on... that made for some funny moments as he was sleeping with a serious face :)))

we also played dumb charades and it was quite funny with some stupid hindi movie names being told like ' switch ka bulb tv ka remote ' - i dont remember the actual movie name - but that was a bakwaas one anyway!!

next day sanju left in the morning for bournemouth and then shagun and myself went around glasgow.. sangee - poor one - had to go for work.

the cathedral in glasgow was really mind-blowing.. its interiors told a very grim story and somehow had a very scary effect to it.

the journey ended on a good note as we cooked some food and had a very good dinner that night.

this is probably going to be my last trip to scotland for a while - i think - you never know !!!

Scottish Weekend

A great trip this weekend..updates to follow.

Sometimes we would like time to freeze.. this was one such moment in my life.

What was special about the trip was not scotland, not the fact that I was away from work.. it was super sangeetha..! (minus the 'h')

she took good care of me.. all along.. and made sure that she said 'podalangai' atleast once every hour. she is such a wonderful company to be with.. i had to admit that she also talks a lot at times.. and its very interesting to listen to her stories.

good people respect each other - thats what we had here.. i knew she was a very good character and she also knew me.. (thats what she says!!) - so we complimented each other well throughout the trip.

hollyroodhouse was very funny.. all the wonderful stories and the way we were joking about it with our facial expressions...!!!

the bus trip the next day was cool.. we were singing all kinds of songs and also relishing the great scenary all along.. mountains clouds water streams and the loch... surrounded us all.. its realy a great feeling to be in a place like scotland.. first of all there is so much purity peace and solace.. its difficult to want to come back to the city world..

sangee was super sweet. i admire the way she cared for me - be it cooking or arranging for the trip or be it showing me directions in glasgow... ;))

all throughout - I wish she is always happy in life.. may the best of the best come to her.

so much completeness in one person is really worth admiring!!!

Thats a good score!!

This weekend, I was looking forward to the cricket games on saturday and sunday. Saturday - well there was some really poor captaincy and I didnt get a good chance to bat. I was sent in very very late in the order - and I managed to score 10 runs.

We ended up losing the match hands down - thanks to our hopeless captain.

Sunday on the other hand was a different day altogether. We lost the toss - nothing new in our club - and were asked to bowl.

We did put in some good bowling and restricted the opposition to 159 in 40 overs. It wasnt pretty hot today - unlike saturday or other weekends in the recent past. It was very pleasant when I went in to bat at number 3. The score was around 32/1. Myself and Brian kept our cool till 10 overs as we had late tea. Then we steadily began our onslaught. 4 runs per over was the required run rate. But it was initially a bit challenging to play the bowlers - some of whom were really doing well.

Patience is what was needed and I had lots of it in me. I scored boundaries very fluently and at the end of it made 41 odd when drinks were called. I was told that I was in my 40s. That gave me some glaring memories of last weekend when I was out at 48. I wanted to somehow keep it going and cross the mystic mark of 50.

The over after drinks - I hit a single and two balls later - got strike again and scored 2 consecutive boundaries. The cheer came up from my team mates. I had made it!

I lifted my bat with joy. There was a suttle applause from the fielders as well. The mystic mark was conquered. It was a great feeling of achievement and relief.

My first 50 in England. Thats something special I would say!

I went on to make the top score on either teams - 73 not out. It included around 14 boundaries, most of which were very good cricketing shots. My partner made 61. Our partnership was around 139.

We won the match in the 27th over by 9 wickets. A thumping win for the team. A landmark achieved for the batsman in me.

Photos from last Saturday match.

During the knock of 48.

In between overs - discussing abt strategy.

Whats Happening on my End.

I think it has been quite some time since I decided to spend some time on my blog. The reason being simply - no time. Nothing new with the reason yeah!

Long hours in the workplace and extended hours playing cricket and squash literally left me physically and mentally drained. Its not a story of one week its literally almost 2 months now. Now thats a long period.

The last time I spent some time for myself was way way before. Cant even remember when it was.

But a lot of the efforts I had put in was also giving me best results. My work is going ok. My squash games - I have been beating my opponent quite comfortably these days. I would have easily won 75% in the last 8 occasions we played. That doesnt take anything away from John. But then I am getting my game back - the way I used to play in college. Good serve and optimal speed.

The best part of my efforts are in the cricket arena. First - sometime back - I got my first Man of the Match recognition for taking 5 wickets.

This is what was posted about me in the match report.

"a change of bowling brought jim and satish on, with a fantastic showing from satish taking 5 wkts for 10 runs in
a paltry 5 over spell. graham & tony got an over in before satish finished off the oppo with a run out. hawley with only 10 men all out for 58."

and then the summary of the match:

"m.o.m 5 wkt star + 1 catch + run out satish vishwanathan"

my 5 wicket record is still the best for this season in my club.

last weekend was really a special moment for me. I opened the batting after a real long time. it was a good game. i scored 48 which included 10 fours. I was very much in my elements. i also opened the bowling - 7-3-18-2 was my figures. I think it was pretty good.

The match report said as follows:

"Satish opened up from the other end (in the absence of the metronomic David Lumby) and was quickly into his groove, dismissing both openers cheaply."

"In response Morden started brightly, in the face of some very good bowling. Girish and Satish put on 80 for the first wicket. Satish in particular looked in excellent nick, cutting and driving beautifully.

But all good things must come to an end and Satish fell on 48, agonisingly short of a well deserved fifty."

"Man of the match - Satish. 2-18 and 48 runs just pips Girish."

On sunday also we played a game - it was good. I scored 28 and took 2 wickets. That was also satisfying from my perspective.

So nearly 3 MOMs later - the way I look at the game is slightly different. I look at it with a lot more focus and concentration. This weekend has two matches. Lets see how it all goes this time.

I did another spectacular feat today. I cleaned my house like never before. I usually do it on the weekends but as you probably are aware, I was busy with cricket for nearly most of the last few weekends so the house was getting messier by the day.

Luckily I got a call from my house agent that someone was planning to buy this house and wanted to have a quick visit tomorrow. So I atleast had a deadline to work towards. I washed all the utensils and cleaned the fridge and the hall.. the bedroom is quite nice too. It looks as new as it was when I got in.

I need to finish my early morning dinner and then go to bed. Tomorrow is just another interesting day coming my way.

A New Lease of Life.

Yesterday evening around 10 ish - I got a call - I was cherishing to get for sometime now. It was Rithu on the line. He called to inform me of the birth of his son. My Nephew has arrived!

Srilu gave birth to a baby boy. Both mother and son are doing fine.

Its a very memorable moment in a person's life. Its really spectacular and beyond any expression of words. Such moments remind us that there is a bigger HIM in this fabric called life.

Hard work and Hard play

The past few weeks have been really hard work on the office front. Long hours and concentrated set of targets to achieve. Its really a challenge at time to consistently hit deadlines. but thats the advantage of it all. you get to start pushing yourself.

the more you push yourself, the more you realise new successes and new challenges as well.

last weekend was also good in a way for me. personally i was looking at proving myself in the club - as i had played a couple of games initially to get used to the conditions here and the people in the team.

decided to become a member of the club. the first match i got to play for the club as a member - its slightly special. we lost the toss and got to bowl first. got a chance to bowl second change. first ball was an inswinging yorker. the batsman was bowled. i got my first wicket of the match - the first ball. and then on was bowling quite well to end up at 7-1-25-3. I was the leading wicket taker. Gave me some satisfaction. Didnt get a chance to bat as the total was only 110 to win.

The next day was another match. I was very eager to get to bat. but this time too, we lost the toss and had to bowl first. came in to bowl second change as usual - got a good line and length. my first wicket was an inswinging yorker. and then went on to take 3 wickets bythe end of my third over. wanted to get more than 3. was working hard on getting it. finally my fifth over bore success as i took my 4th. the captain told me that he was going to change me to try out someone else. i had 4 more deliveries to take my 5th and i did it.

i ended up with a bowling performance of 5-1-10-5. the total to get was 53. we won comfortably.

was extremely satisfying for me. to be able to contribute in bigger pies in both the saturday and sunday matches.

need to buy a bat. lets see if i can get one here itself or maybe not get one until next season.

hard work and hard play. thats what it all is at the moment.

Back in Business

Work work and no play makes Satish a dull person.

Its a little changed in the past few weeks. I am getting to playing squash quite regularly now. Cricket clubbing is going on fine. Didnt play this weekend but played the week before.

Again, another Dravidian innings with one six and one four - totalling 24 runs. Sometimes I do feel I am being too patient. Maybe thats a new way to play the game, rather than my old - hit hit and get out policy.

Its raining today. Looks like it will be this way for sometime now.

Last week - I was extremely disappointed about Pramod Mahajan's death. It was a total shocker. It seems like we are running out of good leaders.

Started cooking this weekend. I am definitely able to manage by myself. If I had known this a couple of years back - things might have been simply different :)

Looking forward to pondicherry for some good news. Rajshri is getting married this week. Here's wishing her a very successful marriage. Something tells me, she is going to change completely after her marriage. Become more responsible and maybe even become quieter. All the best! I wish I could have been there.

God Bless.

P.S: I had a very good haircut yesterday. Looking like some convict out on bail. Now that is a typical British summer cut. Everyone around has similar ones.

Clubbing in London.

Yesterday I sort of started off on one of my favourite desires in life.. to be able to play cricket in a cricket playing nation other than india.

what better place to play in - than england.

the way they play the game is slightly different. be it the bowling strategy or the pace of the game.

its like a polite 'well played' and a cool 'good shot' now and then - from the opposition.

i scored 21 runs.. didnt get out.. played very much in a 'dravidish' mode. the pitch was quite dampish.. it was drizzling initially and so the outfield was a bit slippery.

went 3 down and stayed for a long long time. patiently holding up one end. I also realised that i had become a bit out of touch after joining IBM. so need to get some practice in.

also bowled a couple of overs - didnt get any wickets, but i was more happy with my bowling.. the line was quite good.

its all about being focused now. get into training sessions regularly and improve on some of the finer points.

a good start i would say. other than that, cooking as usual.

need to talk to my dad on some batting tips. comeon dad, show some enthu - learn to operate the computer and start replying to my blog.. :))

Happy B'day Rithu

Hi Rithu,

Here's wishing you a very happy birthday. May the Good God bless you with abundant happiness and success every day.

All the best! Couldnt call you. But then you have a message in my blog. something which you can read whenever you wish like.

I am trying to create a new trend by blogging rather than calling.

Take care and have fun.

Luv,

Satish Viswanathan.

Good to know!!

Good to know that my dad in law is now fine and is discharged from hospital. Thats a big news which came through in the past few days.

This Easter weekend was a bit boring in many ways,no work to do, not much to plan.. ofcourse those who had families here with them, or those who had some good friends circle had a good time travelling places.

I always thought that I am a keen traveller, but you need a good group to make it happen... or else it could just about not take off as expected.

My cooking has come leaps and bounds.. the beans-vendakai-kathirikai starrer sambhar on saturday was a big hit. it ran for many cookers of rice.

The chana masala on monday was also a run away hit with the song - 'chana garam garam' - being the highlight.

I need a better story - read 'sambhar podi'. Once I get that, the production would be of a better technical quality - read taste.

rest alls fine in london.. spring is in now and its getting quite hot and fine.

put on a couple of kilos over the weekend - not doing anything but eating/sleeping and cooking. Need to play some squash and get over things.

Satish.

A small prayer for you.

My father-in-law (read father) is not feeling well. He has been admitted to a hospital in Mumbai today. Ever since I got this news today morning, some part of myself is not here. Its right there - thinking what has happened and hows he doing.

I am praying for him here, silently and sincerely.

Hoping to hear some news on how he is recovering.
Your entire family is standing by you, for you.

God Bless!

30 and still going strong

My In-laws have completed 30 years of marriage. Now, thats really quite an achievement. I just about finished one year and I can understand how tough the going is ;) - Just kidding.

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Thats the reason mom is probably one of the best cooks in mumbai - south indian - pallakad style.

News News News - if there is a walking newsman - thats dad for you. You can talk about pretty much any topic and he would be able to pass on some info - which you didnt know.

I wish you the very best in future as well. Hope you have a 'gala' day today!

Congratulations from your son.

Satish.

My mom is younger by a year!

Hi mom.

Wishing you a very special birthday.

You have just grown a year younger.

I remember the days in Brindavan when things were really hectic for you, cooking good food and then rushing to work et all.

also the other funny incident i remember very clearly is - at times - we would forget to wash my school shirt/trouser.. and after i take a bath.. we would be looking for the school dress and it would come to the fore that we had forgotten washing it.

then we would have a mini discussion about all the options we have and then take a quick decision of what to do.

that was really cool.

brindavan home was very small! all the issues we faced together.. all the complexities we handled quite easily. i think we really had a great time there.

learning was part of the agenda every day.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

as we move along and get into a new year, I wish that you grow wiser and stronger, both in heart and mind.

Every phase in life will pass on. Now you are all set to enter the grandmother phase. God Bless!

your son. your dear son.

Pyara Ek Ghar

i miss you sri. i think i miss you all. i am just hoping to be back soon and we have a good time with the new family members :)

yeah you look totally bloated. thats fine. you look happy. thats what matters at the end of the day!

I will call you this saturday. Pray well to God. Thats the most important thing. It will help in better blood circulation and improve your child's ability to talk to you.

I am looking forward to May. So any preferences - boy or gal? Whats everyone saying??
Do update.

Here spring is setting in. So getting warmer. sometimes hotter. Life is pretty ok otherwise. Managing food very well - according to what suj/mom used to tell about me - lazy and all.

Yesterday I made rice, sambhar, karna kezhangu fry and urlakezhangu bodimas. it all came out pretty well. had a hearty meal!!

SKY connection has come .. so pretty much watching all news/sports.

india lost very badly.. dont want to comment further!

so hows life othewise in pondicherry?

say hi to rithu and rithu parents. i havent been able to get through to amith.. always goes to voicemail. i think he is pretty busy.

ok... rest later on.

Satish.

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

And then i was all forgotten.

my time these days is all between work and cooking. cooking presents an interesting challenge for me each day.

just like a producer who makes a masala movie with a lot of cashable actors, each day- my sambhar or curry has a lot of infallible characters - carrots/cabbage starrer with side actors including masala curry/dal curry/hot curry etc.

work wise - last week was hectic. this week is also the same. hopefully should be ok.

a couple of guys have noticed that i really strain my eyes while working and reading.

i need to get out of that habit. or maybe i need to wear glasses.. who knows ;)?

saw sri pictures.. really she looks very different and mature. my mom was right abt that.

mumbai ppl - please start planning for my trip there.. i am really particular about the food menu this time.. i will make sure that i get to eat what i want and i get to parcel as well!!

i am really looking forward to that trip in june.. lets see how far june is!

time flies here.. its work work work and work! dont know when the week started and when it ended.. so time will pass soon!

so whats happening in mumbai.. no one is replying back except suja ofcourse. seems like everyone is busy - or maybe out of sight : out of mind!

anyway relatives.. hi!! please do drop in a note now and then! - whats happening on rajshri marriage? any updates? how are things going on for the rest of you all there?

where is lazy gal gitli?? where is the hyderbadi sangdu? gurgaon (spelling mistake) sanju - rambo rajesh?

absolutely no idea where you are all. hope you are all doing good.

ok.. take care for now..

satish.
p.s: had a hair cut this saturday.. looking better - i would say.

long time no blog

not having touched the blog for a couple of days now.. its getting a bit important to note whats been happening of late at my end.

got a dvd player from my house owner.. watched asterix cd and heard some tamil songs. this was during the weekend.

also did some vegetable shopping... got some spring onion and some yam among other vegetable items.

then in the afternoon made some moong dal in the cooker. it came out really well.

also the mixed sambhar - cabbage/carrot/ladies finger/brinjal - again in the cooker..

it also came out very well.

it seems like i am saying only mostly about my cooking. i will find some more intersteing topics to blog.. need to think!

was looking for a cricket club to play.. its a bit costly here.. lets see if we can find some good deal in a club.

tomm i am going to stanlow.. thats a couple of hours journey by train one way.. may take my digicam. this is my second trip there..

need to get up early and catch the 7:13 train in the morning.

so no blogs tomm.. london weather is becoming better.. not that cold.. though winter is officially on.

thats it for now.. have to get going.

The Mathematics involved in cooking

Its always been ratios and numbers all along. How many teaspoons of salt? how many for this curry powder .. and that one?

How many cups of water is required for one cup of rice..

its all these numbers and ratios which eventually result in a well cooked meal.

ofcourse, you need all the ingredients to make the meal.

last nite, i almost got it right.. made vendakai/kathirikai sambhar.. came out well.. added tamarind water and also less haldi than what i used to put earlier.

so it all added up in the right ratios and numbers.. voila. last night meal was good!

Sambhar of a new grade!

last nite.. managed to go this sri lankan shop near my home.. picked up some very critical powder items - dhaniya powder, turmeric powder.. etc..

and also got some brinjal.

the sambhar took pretty less time to make and with all the powders added, it was really good!

i really relished the sambhar last nite.. also bought some ponni rice and some dal.

so hopefully this weekend., there will be a good feast in my place

yesterday morning.. it was also snowing a bit.. so that was a really different experience.. sort of enjoyed it!!

New Home New Experience

Managed to move to a new home yesterday afternoon. its a good feeling after all.. finally getting into the first stage of working in a new country.#

and also yeah.. i also started off with some cooking. man that was some experience.. its not to say that i dont know cooking.. but its definitely like - i have forgotten a lot.

started off to make some rice, sambhar, dal and then some chappatis.

chappatis - ofcourse were just ready made and only had to heat them - believe it or not, they came out really well !!!! :)))

rice - basmati - added extra water.. so more of kuzhu sadham.

sambhar - added thoor dal.. which ultimately become thick and the avarakkai i had cut - didnt boil completely and was more raw than anything.. felt like a pre-historic man!

so had some chappati with dal - which was yummy and has some very little rice with so called sambhar - and some curd.. all somewhere at midnight.

but out of it all - one good thing - which my family would be happy to hear - i am attempting to eat healthy home cooked food - though its not entirely landing up in that shape!!

eating murukku

just had some asthalin.. feeling much better. - i normally dont have medicine.. but if it does become necessary - then i do take.

murukku tastes yummy - thanks to my parents who got it for me from pondicherry.

it was actually a very good gesture for them to come to bangalore to see me off.

hearing chinna chinna asai song from roja now.. i remember the first time i heard this song was when i was in my 9th standard.. that was also the time when i was trying hard to prove to myself that i could get the first rank in my class.

it was really 5 through 10 all the time.. this time i wanted it to be special.. i really planned it out like anything.. kept on focusing on my writing speed..

i always knew that writing speed was the key to success in exams.. so wrote and wrote and wrote.. be it a maths problem or a chemistry equation.. i wrote until i could say it upside down.

then in my 1st midterm - i did exceedingly well.

so i knew i was in the right track. now my main target was my quaterly exams. it was the key for me at that age.. how sincere and focused i used to be then!

those days - i used to keep motivating myself - amidst all the issues i was in - wanting to prove something to myself.. something which would give me satisfaction.

well.. the day the marks were out - i really could thank God for the results.. i scored 823/1000 - a total which was the top most not only in A section but also inthe other 5 sections.

infact no one even touched 800. the next highest was in the 780's.

that day i bought a cassette of Roja.. Lahari company .... I hadnt heard Roja at all till that day - I had promised myself that only after getting the first rank - I would hear Roja....!

I somehow had a huge interest in music.. could focus on studies while listening to music.. music was always the big source of inspiration in my life - all along. especially ARRehman!

I had bought each and every one of his cassettes since Roja - I sort of related him to my first big success in life - my first rank in 9th standard.

That year - I got the proficiency award in my school annual day - my parents didnt come for the annual day.. so i was all alone relishing my success.. but didnt really know whom to share it with!

whatever they had done for me - i am really grateful!

had very good friends in premjit and nallam and kaushik and kapil. every one of us was very mature and we really helped each other when the other was in any kind of problem!

struggled a lot in that phase of my life.. but somehow i never gave up!

- another happy moment was when i acted in the school plays.. i never really was an outspoken person in school.. never really came out in the open to do things like drama.

but my school teacher Mr. Subramanian - he was the one who really wanted me to get in. Those drama rehearsal days were all full of fun. Though initially shy, I was able to make it and did a good show - in my school annual day.

i played the role of the "devil" and kapil was the "imp". it was one funny play. anoop was the peasant. had a good role with minimum makeup :)

no one came to watch the annual day - from my end. that was just how it was! - i was all alone doing things and enjoying them quite alone.

i had done two dramas in school in fact!

--

just had some sambhar rice with murukku.. feeling much better now. need to take some rest and start off tomm to look for houses.

satish.

Its winter in London

Landed last week on Sunday. Didnt really expect that it would be this cold. Thought would be able to manage..... having seen winters with minus degrees in pilani.

but then this was to be something totally different and difficult as well.

the hotel where i am staying is literally in the center of london.. its a good one.. but there is wonderful background noise of the heater which really irritates me!

so i sleep with the lights on.. i think i am used to thinking that when the lights are switched off, there must be complete silence.

anyway!

work has started off well.. nothing really tough so far.. but the ball has started rolling and it wouldnt be late when I am really tied up day in day out.

colleagues are all helpful. so nothing much to worry.

missing home and the good food - thanks to my mom!! here only lunch is something substantial.. rest all is for namesake. health wise - i am having some dry cough for the past two days.. havent told anyone... for they would be unduly worrying.

rest all is fine. started looking for a home.... nothing materialised as such.. hopefully this weekend something should come through.

havent spoken to my parents after i reached here... i think they must be really worried about me.

havent unpacked much of the stuff.. its all tucked in safely in the luggage.

ok... shall continue after having some murukku,

satish.
